YIKES!

100 Smart Pilots and the Dumb Things They Did Yet Lived to Tell About ‘Em

By JEFFREY JAMES MADISON

WHY I WROTE YIKES!

A lot of people helped me become an airline pilot. I wrote YIKES!… to pay it forward. The 100 smart pilots in YIKES!… shared their stories for our benefit. My goal– with your help–is to benefit 100 flight schools, Civil Air Patrol squadrons, and other STEM groups helping young folks achieve their aviation industry, dreams. Donate now. Get your copy of YIKES!… With the sale of one million books, I will use the proceeds to buy up to 100 Redbird, full motion flight simulators or create up to one hundred, $100,000 aviation/STEM scholarships, or a combination of the two.

ABOUT YIKES!

Hangar flying is a favorite pastime of many pilots. Swapping “fish tales,” judging the takeoffs and landings of other pilots, and sharing each other’s “yikes!” moments while sitting in the comfort and safety of a hangar or an FBO is a time-honored tradition—a way of passing along sage advice from one pilot to the next.

YIKES!… is just that. From the comfort and safety of your favorite armchair, you get to witness these “100 smart pilots and the dumb things they did yet lived to tell about ‘em.” Learn from the wisdom they gained from their own snafus, mishaps and close calls.

The stories in YIKES!… are true, taken from NASA reports—the FAA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System database—where pilots voluntarily and anonymously share their moments of bad judgment with the rest of us. I analyzed their stories in my General Aviation News column, “Human Factors.” The chapters in YIKES! are curated from my column. YIKES! is entertaining, educational and inspirational for pilots and non-pilots alike.

PRAISE FOR YIKES!

“I read this book, cover to cover, in one sitting. It spoke to me in a little voice that said, ‘Remember when that was us?’ JJ writes beautifully about the places every professional pilot of enough experience has been. If you want to be prepared before you go there, read this book.”
–Hans Yao, 737 Captain, Southwest Airlines

“I find that your book really contributes to Aeronautical Decision-Making in the most effective way. Thank you for such a thoughtful book!”
–James Aaron Modeste, FAA Part 141 Chief Flight Instructor

“Humanized cautionary tales to the bold who undertake the most daring of pursuits.”
–Eric Jordan, Instrument-Rated Private Pilot
